I'm looking to buy the Amazing Clear Cast but I'm concerned if my intended use will work for it.
I would like to use it as a brush on to smooth out 3d printed items, then followup with sanding and painting. Is this possible with the Clear Cast? I understand you can die it as well, but right now it would be to apply it to the print, sand to smooth out any imperfections and give it a rough surface to paint against.

It's a 2-part urethane like AlumiRes, right? I can't see brush-on working at all.

It depends on your surface shape, if it's flat then it's perfect as it self levels but if it's got ridges, dips, rises, etc then it will take a bit of work to get it to stay in place.
I use Amazing Clear Cast Plus to smooth out/fill in the print lines on PLA and add back a shine to the sanded surface but it also takes a bit of work to get it to stay in place with the long open time so I wait out some of the open time and have my handy hair dryer on hand to help the cure along on most of the spots while I keep brushing it back up on ridges and rises so it doesn't pool in the dips or off the print.
Now I only do this on PLA prints as my ABS prints don't need it at all since I just do acetone smoothing on those. So short answer : yes it can do that but it does take a little extra work to get it to stick in place.
Though if you're going to paint over it anyway, why not use RC-3 as it has a shorter open time (easier to get to stay in place before it sets) and it will work the same way. I hope this helps.

I appreciate the information and feedback. I'm not sure what RC-3 is. I was looking at the xtc-3d compound, but stock availability is a ways out. The fact that I could pick this stuff up at Michaels and it was nearby, as well as cheaper, I was investigating whether it was a viable alternative. Sounds like I might just have to opt for the patience and buy the xtc-3d.

Sorry, I've always called it RC-3 but the full name is "AlumiRes (RC-3) Tan" - www.alumilite.com/resins/alumires-rc-3-tan/ and you should be able to find it at Michaels, I think I've seen it there before. Since Hobby Lobby stopped having the 40% off coupons, I usually order right from ALumite when I can as it only takes three days to get to me. With the shorter open time, brushing on works very well with RC-3 and it should stop being "runny" at minute 2 of the open time.
