Hello! I am 99% new to mold making and casting and need HELP, mentoring and guidance on a project. ANY comments, suggestions would be extremely appreciated and welcomed.
The city in which I live (Oshkosh, WI) is plagued with lakeflies every spring/early summer and our arts council has ordered 3'x4' replicas of plastercast lakeflies for artists to alter for public display.
One of my proposals was accepted (yay!) and now I need to make 100's of smallish (I'm thinking between 3" - 4" x 1.5" - 2") reproductions of original clay sculpture(s) I will create (with molds) out of some sort of VERY weather resistant material.
After reading about some of the materials and thinking about how I want to tackle this here is my initial thought on how this will go:
Create my pottery original models of the body and wings (wings separate) (my main artistic path is pottery but I don't want to sculpt & fire this many pieces)
Make Silicone 2-part molds for each body part and wings (maybe only 1 part open back molds for the resin wings)
Use some kind of cement/stone like casting material in the molds to make several hundred replicas of my original sculptures
Use clear resin to create the wings for each body.
Paint plastercast form & all bodies
Attach bodies to main plastercast form with a bondo type material
Attach resin 'wings' onto the bodies with a bondo type material
Cover entire pieces with final resin coating that is EXTREMELY tough and weather resistant.
Submit finished piece to the city, be showered with admiration and win the grand prize for being an amazing artist.
If anyone can comment on my ideas above and SUGGEST MATERIALS I could use for each step and comment if the plan I have above seems reasonable and doable within three months working on it about 10-15 hours a week.
