Hello -
I am brand new to the mold/casting world and need some help.
We make spearguns and are trying to expand to making our own handle grips - I have a prototype made from clay but need help determining what material to use for the mold and cast.
The size of our handles are roughly the same same size as a standard handgun grip...if that helps. I am thinking we need only need a single mold but will require enough material to create a mold for each side of the grip. The 2 sides will bolt together on an aluminum frame that runs down the middle of the handle grip. Furthermore the sides of the grip do not match (they will be an ergonomic grip conformed to a hand instead of a standard uniform grip with matching sides).
The cast needs to be a rubbery finish so as to provide some level of grip underwater. Solid/rigid plastic will be slippery under water so a rubbery finish for grip is required. We are also looking to have different colors in the grip
I can send some pictures if it helps.
Thanks for any direction you can provide!
Sam

Good Day Sam, We have had many people through the years do both Speargun Grips and Regular Gun Grips. This is usually a two piece mold that needs to be made for this application Sam. Shrinkage could be an issue I am sure, so the best silicone to use in order to remedy that is the Plat 55 (platinum cure) silicone, this does need to have a vacuum pulled on it. To read up on the silicone: www.alumilite.com/store/p/927-Plat-55.aspxFor the part itself we have Flexible Urethane's that can be dyed just about any color you wish using a non water based dye we have those in our product line. The Flexible Urethane's need to be degassed for best results Sam. To read up on Flexible Urethane's and the different durometer's from 30-80, please look at: www.alumilite.com/store/p/966-Flex-70.aspxPlease feel free to call and or send pictures to us to look at that is always helpful. Happy New Year! Warmest Regards, Carol world@alumilite.com

I noticed you referenced the Flex 70 in you response (which, by the way, thanks for the detailed reply!)...Can you describe the difference between the Flex 70 and the Flex 80 in layman terms? I know he 80 is harder but is it almost as hard as a plastic piece? or is there a slight flex? Have people had more success with the 70 for this type of grip application? Just curious for some direction before ordering.

Affinity,
There is a slight flex to it, the flex is going to depend on the thickness of the piece. The reason I referenced 70 is for the grips that is what most have used. If you would like to email me with your address and reference this conversation Affinity I would be happy to send you cured samples of the whole line of Flexible Urethane for you to feel and compare. I think seeing and touching is far more informative then reading about it and it's comparison to something you may be familiar with.
Have a a great day!
Regards,
Carol carol@alumilite.com
