I need some help with a bonding/glue issue please! I may have used the wrong glue, or it is possible there was an existing problem with one of the casts...I attached a small cast to a larger piece using a clear glue (most likely either Gorilla superglue OR Loctite ultragel, BUT it is possible that I grabbed the other Gorilla glue which is not a cyanoacylate... ). After several days the glue is not dry, but sticky, and still clear. I pulled the pieces apart easily, and the flat back of the small piece has partially softened! This soft area would be the center area of top of cast as poured. The front of the larger cast remains dry and intact after wiping off a little sticky glue. Both pieces seemed set & dry when I glued them. I think both pieces were poured at the same time from the same batch: Alumilite Amazing White with some inert fillers & a little pigment. The smaller piece would have been the "dregs" of the pour, so it is quite possible that there was some poorly mixed resin scraped from the cup. What is the recommended glue type for Alumilite Amazing White urethane resin? Should I use cyanoacrylate? Or is there a better choice? Thanks!

I use CA (cyanoacrylate) with all my resin pieces (RC-3) anything else has been met with less than desirable results. Also you should wash the resin pieces... soak them for 45 minutes in warm soapy water, then wash the parts thoroughly under warm running water. Common dish soap ( I use Dawn) is good for this because it will easily remove the greasy mold release film and anything else that may cause improper adhesion from the parts caused by the casting process. The same washing process also applies to any resin that you are wanting to paint.

Thanks! I think I must have scraped the cups & got some poorly mixed urethane white resin on the smaller mold: I will try to be more careful. Most of it is hard, so I have cut away the soft parts and the visible front & sides are fine. I should be able to reattach it now.

Brian is right PTARTIST... we use CA glues pretty much exclusively when adhering resin to resin. Cleaning is important and abrading the surface can help as well.
Happy New Year!

When bonding clear resin to resin, does the CA turn white? Or does it stay clear?

Picklesnout,
There will be some crazing of white when the glue hits the resin Picklesnout. The other option for adhesion is the epoxy glue, but that will turn yellow over time. It is difficult to find something that works well bonding clear to clear. I personally have not tried it but years ago a customer told me she used a small amount of the urethane to bond the urethane together with acceptable results, not perfect but could enough for what she needed.
Have a wonderful day!
Regards,
Carol

I did a test today, Gorilla glue clear and Gorilla super glue, both hold well and look clear. No fogging at all.
