Hi, I'm trying to create a mold using your Alumilite High Strength 2. The tree sculpture that I'm trying to mold is 11" high and 12" in diameter at the base w/ roots and fallen leaves, made of plasticine non-sulphur, non-hardening. I want to cast it in epoxy resin. I'm looking at a plastic polycarbonate container to use as a mold box. Would this work? What do I need to know about the box, preparing it, etc.? I'm choosing the High Strength 2 because of its ability to stretch, as the branches (7" wide) are a couple of inches wider than the 5" trunk. What else do I need to know about working with this much silicone to make the mold? I hope to use this mold multiple times to create these trees. Any tips would be extremely helpful.

using a plastic polycarbonate container for a mold box will work...as long as it contains the RTV silicone when you pour it you are fine....pretty much anything you can come up with will work. Coat the inside of the box with a mold release before pouring......spray mold release, Vaseline, what ever you want.

OK, I ended up ordering an 18 quart polypropylene cylinder container for the mold box, and plan to use Alumilite High Strength 3 for the mold. My question is, I plan to order and make up 10 lbs. in order to get a large enough mold to cover the sculpture. What do I need to know about mixing this much mold making material at one time? Does it change the curing process, or the amount of time that I have to mix and pour it? Anything else I should know about working with this much Alumilite High Strength 3? Thank you for the information. I want the project to go well, as my original sculpture is made out of non-hardening clay and I hope to reproduce the object. Since it is non-hardening, I think I have one chance to get it right.

Kris,
Can you email me a picture of the tree, please? I just want to see the contour and shapes to make sure the HS3 will do what you need it to do. There is a volume calculator on the website with dimensions LXWXH of course allowing 1/4 inch for side walls to help you determine how much silicone and resin you will need for most projects. Yes one chance, you are probably right, as it will distort your piece getting it out or possibly in pieces. However... that said I have seen many people of course depending on shape, undercuts etc. have to pull hardened clay out in pieces.
Regards,
Carol
