Hello, I am new to casting and so far so good. The Super Kit made the process very easy to learn! My question is did the casting resin change in the Super kit? My first kit purchased a couple weeks ago had bottles labled "Alumilite low viscosity super light liquid casting plastic" part A & B of course.
That resin is awesome! It cures fast, I had little to no bubbles and when set it was very hard. Only bad part was that I used it all up. No worries make a trip to Hobby Lobby and get more resin. I noticed this resin was RC-3 and decided it was worth a shot.
First impression was that it cured slower and was much more flexible when cured. This was a problem as the part I am making needs to be rigid and tough.
I thought i might have screwed up the ratio I very carefully mixed another batch and cast my mold again. Same result, kind of a slick surface that almost feels oily and the plastic is flexible.
Unsure of what to do I decided to wait for Hobby Lobby to restock the Super Kit so I could get the better resin and finish my builds for the customer. A week later the kit was back in stock so I purchased it and got back to work. I open the box and it had RC-3 in it?
same resin with the same results!
please help me identify what the original resin was or what will perform the same. I have built molds for a customer and cannot pull parts until this is resolved.

A few years ago we switched the Alumilite Regular out for the RC-3 as you did not need to shake the B side and it was simply a more user friendly system that gave people an extra 30 seconds of mix time. Most people loved the change as the parts had some more flexibility to them (weren't as stiff or rigid) but were still hard. So unfortunately we no longer sell the Alumilite Regular through Hobby Lobby but can be shipped out to you today by simply ordering through the website. Some independent hobby stores still carry the Alumilite Regular as well or they could order it for you. Here are two links ... the first to the actual Alumilite Regular page on the site and the second to the store locator. If you have any unopened RC-3 bottles, I'm happy to exchange them for you as well. Simply send them back to us at Alumilite and put it to my attention with a note inside and I will send you the Regular. www.alumilite.com/store/p/1022-Alumilite-Regular-Tan.aspxwww.alumilite.com/store/pg/22-Find-Locally.aspxthx, Mike

Mike,
Thanks for the quick response. Sounds like the kit I purchased was a couple years old. I did wonder why the silicone for the mold was all settled out. It took an hour of mixing to free up the solids, might be why the mold did not last very long. I do have unopened bottles of RC-3 that I will send back to you. I can see why some people might like the RC-3 over the regular. however for my application I need the rigidity.
Using the store locator I cannot get away from Hobby Lobby! they are everywhere around here. So I will need to order resin direct from now on.
What is your highest strength resin available?
Thanks, Noah

Alumilite Regular is very high strength but it really depends on what you are looking for ... flex strength in a rigid I'd recommend Performance 65D or 80D, heat transfer Vac 50, abrasion resistance Vac 25, etc. etc.
