Hi. First post in this forum. I need to reproduce an obsolete motorcycle part - the original (see pictures) appears to be moulded from white nylon. It is around 5" x 2" but the walls are only about 1/16" or 2mm thick. My research (ok, youtube) makes me think that I should make a two-part mold, first using the flattest edge as a base, and then turning it over and filling the 'inside' of the pattern to make the second part of the mold. Sounds simple enough... but I'm afraid that I may fail to foresee any obvious problem until it all goes wrong!
I would be very grateful for any advice regarding the feas ibility of this project. TIA.

You've actually got the right idea there, I'd go with it just like that with a two piece mold and that positioning.
If you think it might fail, you could always try a couple test runs with Amazing Remelt (if you have it on hand like I do) or with some plain old clay (be sure to completely clean it back off afterwards). The biggest thing to making a two piece mold is having a release agent (a thin layer of Vaseline or even cooking spray if that's all you have will work) between the two parts. I hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

Yes - it worked! Making the mold was the most time-consuming (and expensive) part of the project - but I now have as many copies as I want. Thank you for your help.

What material did you use for the part itself?
