I want to enclose some acrylic sheet material in a mold and then turn on the lathe. When i tried to do this the piece splits where the acrylic and resin meet. I have tries sanding the acrylic prior to molding but that has not worker. I was using Alumilite clear slow. Is there another resin that would bond to the acrylic?

It should have worked but I've never used the lathe so I'm not sure what when wrong. Can we have some of our wood turners chime in with some advice here?

I do not believe Alumilite Clear Slow will bond correctly to acrylic sheet material. Many lathe turners use acrylic sheet for molds for that very reason, although they coat them with mold release normally. It would be helpful to know what end result you are trying to achieve. IF you are looking for a laminated effect, then you could pour your own sheet out of the same Alumilite Clear Slow. That is what most turners do. There are some good videos of making Alumilite ribbon blanks. Same technique but you would pour the sheets thicker and then use them for laminations.

Thanks for the reply. I was asked by some firefighter customers for red line pens. So I'm trying to make the blank in a round mold with the red in the middle. I would need to be 1/16th of an inch in width but would need to be rigid to hold the shape.
