Hello,
I recently started to refinish my old deck. I pressured washed and sanded everything. The boards have cracks from small to pretty big. I was thinking I would like to fill as many cracks as can with glow in the dark epoxy then sand the boards and then stain the deck. I just have a few questions before I start. Would I have to seal the cracks with epoxy first? If yes is there an epoxy to seal and then another to pour in the cracks? Most of the cracks are on the deck board so they are horizontal but there are a few on the 6x6 deck post that I would also like to fill. I was thinking I would put painters tape on the post and try and pour the epoxy in the cracks behind the tape. Does that seem like an ok approach or is there a better way to get vertical cracks. Thanks for any information.

That's a big project, I would love to see how it turns out myself. To answer some of your questions, yes you do need to seal the wood or you'll get "off gassing" which would give you bubbles you can see. Here's a page that has some instructions on how to do this: www.alumilite.com/applications/surface-coating/ . You're pretty much adding a little "surface coating" when you're filling in cracks so that page should help you. As for the vertical parts, I haven't done anything like that myself but I think your tape idea would work - just be sure to have the heat gun close as possible as you'll probably need it to hurry the cure up enough for the resin to stay in place. I hope this helps.

Thanks for any information. Might be a little late but wanted to throw in a thought or two. I would stain the deck prior to anything else. You don't want to stain your epoxy, just the wood. If you intend on using clear or light colors know that UV will have an effect and chances are you'll notice it yellowing within 2-3 years. I'd highly recommend looking into a 2 part polyaspartic which has a better resistance to UV effects. Not here to pitch one product over another. Just sharing some professional experiences. Now for your vertical posts, if the tape idea doesn't work (I think it will be a ton more work then your expecting), maybe try mixing a small amount up, let it thicken just a touch and then try toweling it into the cracks. Work from the bottom up and if need be put tape, a board or whatever against the post to stop the epoxy from running back out. There's always a way and it will be a awesome project if you can pull it off so I hope it works out.
