I have never had much success getting the swirly, mixed up color patterns some are able to achieve in their pen and turning blanks using Clear Slow.
I have tried waiting until the resin was 95F and that produced better results BUT it goes from a pourable consistency to a glooey blob in about 20 seconds so not much time to work.
I have used some Divine Island pigments and noticed that the colors I mixed up with them are very resistant to mixing with resin mixed with Alumilite dyes and produced some very nice swirly patterns with distinct color separation. The only problem is that they are opaque pigments and just can't get the translucent, jewel-like effect with them. Ideally, if they would provide me with some 'clear pigment' I might be able to get the effect I'm after...anybody know what pigment carrier bases are made of?
Are there any other additives that I could mix in (in small amounts of course...maybe a drop or two per ounce) to prevent the various colors from combining?
In other words, imagine I have mixed up a batch of Clear Slow and divided it into 2 cups, each with a different color combination of Alumilite dyes and mica powder. One cup is blue and one is yellow. What could I add to one cup or the other so that when I poured them and swirled them together I would get definite blue streaks and yellow streaks but not much green from them mixing together?
...or is this just something I'm going to have to experiment with and find out for myself, one (wasted) ounce at a time? I assume I can try just about anything as long as it does not contain water?
...or maybe I'm going about this all wrong and someone can tell me another way to get distinct swirly color patterns.
Thanks
