Hi everyone! I am trying to figure out what the best resin to use for knife handles is. I have had pretty good success with using epoxy, but I know a lot of people use alumilite. I am not sure what the real differences are between pu resin and epoxy. If I understand correctly (and I might not lol) epoxy is supposed to be harder, but somehow pu resin is more scratch resistant. Why is this? Also, and this might seem strange and be an error on my part, but I have had some epoxy "dent". It is hard, I can shape it on the grinder, but if I push my fingernail hard into it, there is just the tiniest of indention in it, nothing major, just frustrating. Is that normal for epoxy or did I screw up? lol. Also, I know that alumilite doesn't tolerate moisture well, but if I wanted to say paint on my piece, either by painting the mold or after demolding, am I good to use any paint so long as it is completely dry before adding the resin? And if that weren't enough questions, I have more lol. If I wanted to cast a resin piece, paint it, then cast it again, can I? Do I need to sand it before casting? If I've painted on it, will that be enough "tooth" for the next layer? Sorry to ask so many questions here but I figure this might be the best place to get it all answered lol.
To sum up here are the million questions I'm hoping y'all can help with:
1. What are the real differences between polyurethane resin and epoxy?
2. If epoxy is stronger, how is pu more scratch resistant?
3. Does hardened epoxy still "dent" with enough pressure?
4. Can I use any kind of paint in the mold before casting as long as it is completely dry before the cast?
5. Can I use any kind of paint on the cast piece?
6. What paint works best?
7. Can I cast a resin piece, paint it, then cast it again?
8. If I can, what is the best way to do this?
Thank you all in advance!!!
