I am using Alumilite Clear Cast High Gloss to fill a table top (12” x 48” x 1/2”) that is filled with flat glass marbles that have been hot glued to a smooth sanded red oak board. I have done two pours, using three 16 Oz. Kits. The first kit covered about one third of the tray - I had expected it to cover a lot more. I purchased this first kit from Hobby Lobby, and since this was the only kit they had on the shelf (the other one had leaked through the box and I gave it to the clueless manager to get it off the sales shelf), I ordered two more kits from Amazon. This meant that this first pour sat overnight - about 16 hours. It was still tacky, which I assumed was a good thing to do additional pours, based on everything I could read. I made sure that when other kits arrived, I waited until they warmed to room temperature (about 70 degrees).
Knowing that it was going to take more than I originally thought, I mixed the entire kit at once. I really mixed it well, slowly, and then let it sit to release any bubbles. I started this pour where I left off with the first one, and poured a little thicker, knowing I had another kit to use to fill over the whole thing. As I had done with the first pour, I used a small paint brush to make sure that the resin got down into the spaces around the marbles, and between the marbles and the sides - it leveled out on it’s own in most places, but needed the help in others.
I mixed the third kit the same way as the second, and started at the end where I started, that had been poured the first day, and continued down the whole piece, pouring to give an even, level finish. It looked great when I finished and I was really excited to see it when it was dry. I did the first pour on Thursday and the second/ final pour on Friday. It’s now Sunday, and the end that I started on Thursday is still tacky, while the rest that I poured on Friday is dry to the touch. Any ideas? This section had felt somewhat dry when I did the second pour on Friday, and the entire board got resin from the third kit and only the part that sat overnight is still tacky. I made sure the temperature in the room didn’t change, and everything I read said that if I got a second coat on within 24 hours, I shouldn’t have to sand.
Tried to attach a photo, but system won’t let me. Help?!
