I had a mini casting kit that I tried to give a go this weekend. Mixed 3.8 oz of each side. Stirred them together for about 45 seconds. Poured into a smoothon mold to cast pens in.
As soon as I got to the second pen blank it got REALLY hot and started to bubble and cure. I barely got a third one cast and it hardened on me and cured in the cup... I was sad...
Was it old stock (purchased at Hobby Lobby)?

Moserlabs,
A mini casting kit has 8 ounces total of opaque (tan) resin, AlumiRes. There is only a two minute open time on the resin. Mixing it for 45 seconds you were well in to you open time, so the resin started to "get hot" (the exothermic reaction) and ready to make the transition from liquid to solid. You only need to mix/blend well for approximately 15-20 seconds before starting your pour. If you were in a warm environment, it could have shortened your open/work time as well.
Rarely but occasionally people have purchased old stock from various places. What you have described is not what would happen should product be out of date or exceeded a shelf life. I really don't think it was old stock, Hobby Lobby orders quite frequently.
Regards,
Carol
