I am wanting to start building handles for knives. First of all, which product do I need. It has to be tough and clear, so I can tint it. Also, how do I build a mold for the knife scales. the mold will be approx. 6" long, 2-1/2" wide and 1" deep. At times it may be thicker, because I would like to put stabilized wood, pinecone, etc. in the mold. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Dear Pat,
Most of the knife artist use the Alumilite Clear Slow, we have a lot of them. It is a urethane resin it is pretty tough, can be turned, sanded, drilled, etc. We have silicone for mold making materials being a urethane it bonds to everything but silicone. There are those that use cutting board for the mold box and use the Stoner "silicone" spray release.
The wood, cones, or anything you wish to encapsulate must be dry so stabilization is a good way to go. For extra help Pat I would suggest going on the Alumilite Site, next to the Alumilite Clear there is a technical data sheet that has a wealth of information that is helpful when using the Clear Resins.
Welcome!
Warmest Regards,
Carol
