I am relatively new to casting my own pen blanks, although I did just complete about 45 pens in the last 2 months. I just cast two more pens, and when I went to turn them they were extremely brittle and just broke apart at the barest of touch from my turning tools. Could this be cause by my shop being cold now, or shelf life of the Alumilite (although I believe I have only had it about 2 months, and it should have a 3 month shelf life).
Any suggestions from the pro's out there?
Thank you,
Greg

Interesting ... did all the material come from the same batch ... I'm assuming it did as you stated you had it about 2 months. Was there anything different about these blanks ... bigger, smaller, demold them quicker, waited less or more time before turning, or did you use any fillers into the blank or was it 100% resin?

As far as I know, which the exception of two things, everything else is the same. 1. My workshop is now colder than it was over the last two months. 2. I did wait less time before turning them (I thought about this after I posted).
I have two more blanks I started before I has the two blowouts. I pulled them out of the pressure pot Saturday night, and I hope to try and turn them tonight. If they are OK, then I am going to assume it was #2 above that caused the issue.
Thank you Mike.

I turned another pen last night, and this time it went perfect. I would swear everything was the same as the first, except that I waited much longer after demolding to actually turn the pen. So, for now, I guess everything is ok and that last batch was just a fluke. I will post again if it happens again. Thank you,
