Casting Experience: Novice
Work Environment: Home / CT, USA (No industrial equipment of any kind)
So a few weeks ago I purchased a 16 oz set of Amazing Clear Cast, and have been trying to cast custom pieces for model sets that I work on called Zoids. I have had mixed results with my casts. Some of the pieces come out beautifully with no issues while others will only partially cast--and some won't even cast at all. I will come back the next morning to my molds with resin surrounding the mold and an empty cavity where the resin had been. I've tried trouble-shooting, I've tried mixing my resin parts both by weight and by volume with the same results. And each time it's seemingly random. One piece that cast fine one day, won't cast right the next day and vice versa. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've attached some pictures of my molds with their dimensions. Please Help!
Products being used in my molding process:
- Smooth-On ReboundĀ® Self Thickening Brush-On Silicone (two part mold material)
- Resin model pieces (used as masters)
- 20-year-old Petroleum Jelly (mold release between silicone to silicone contact when pouring second half of mold. Not used on actual cavities when casting resin)
- Amazing Clear cast
- Castin' Craft Transparent resin dye
- Cardboard to hold the molds rigid
Pictures:
Purple Box: The bottom green piece cast perfectly. However, the piece directly above it did not cast at all. As I said I came back the next morning and what would have been that piece was overflowed resin hardened around the base of the mold. (Mold is h: 3 7/8" x w: 3 1/4" or h: 9.8 cm x w: 8.25 cm)
Blue Box: Canopy/Windshield came out fine and the overflow cast the small fang piece by accident (Black box)
Pink Box: Tried casting the set of teeth and came back the next day to an empty mold
